Choosing a Screwdriver for Furniture Assembly
For flat-pack furniture, faster is not always better. The goal is controlled fastening without damaging panels, cam locks or hardware.
Which tool class makes sense?
- Manual screwdriver: fine for a few screws, for finishing the final turns by feel, and for delicate fittings.
- General-purpose electric screwdriver: can reduce effort on repeated suitable screws. Start at the lowest torque setting if the tool provides one.
- Precision electric screwdriver: intended for tiny electronics; often too weak for ordinary furniture fasteners.
- Drill/driver: helpful only where the furniture instructions permit it and the material and fastener need greater power.
Check before buying
Check screw-head type, included bits, the power and torque controls, and available space around the fastener. Avoid overtightening particleboard and similar materials. Follow the furniture manufacturer's assembly instructions.
